Warehouse Dismantling and Relocation: Step-by-Step Moving Checklist

Start your warehouse relocation with a design for the new site. Before dismantling, you need to determine what equipment is moving, where it will be installed, and in what sequence the zones will be launched.


Break the move itself into separate stages to keep operations manageable. Below is a checklist with the sequence of work and checkpoints that need to be completed at each stage.

Warehouse Relocation Checklist: 6 Sequential Steps

Relocation has a clear sequence from site preparation to launch. For pallet racking, compare the new configuration with the loads, floor characteristics, and warehouse equipment before starting work. These parameters will determine whether the existing system can be relocated without changing its operating configuration.


Sequence:

  1. Approve the layout of the new warehouse. Determine the receiving and shipping areas, storage locations, row locations, and work aisles. Evaluate the existing warehouse racks against this layout: the old system geometry must fit into the new flow of goods.

    Checkpoint: For each system, the installation location, required capacity, and compatible storage equipment are known.

  2. Take an inventory of the equipment. Record the manufacturer, system type, number of frames and traverses, completeness and condition of the elements. Inspect the structures before moving and document their condition, as additional damage occurs during dismantling, packing, loading or transportation.

    Checkpoint: Each kit has an identifier, photo, condition description, and decision on further use.

  3. Plan the movement of inventory. Determine the priority product lines, the location of temporary storage, and the date from which the new site will take over the shipment. A separate plan for the placement of inventory during the move will close one of the main organizational tasks of relocation.

    Checkpoint: Each batch has a fixed route from the old storage location to a specific area of the new warehouse.

  4. Dismantle and label equipment by zone. Tie the dismantling sequence to the upcoming assembly. Labeling the row, section, and tier will reduce the time it takes to sort parts after delivery.

    Checkpoint: The code on each batch of components uniquely identifies its place in the approved plan of the new warehouse.

  5. Transport and assemble in stages. Deliver the dismantled kit in batches directly to the finished assembly areas. This way, parts move less around inside the new premises, and the assembly team receives the required kit in the planned sequence.

    Checkpoint: The next batch is shipped after its assembly area is confirmed to be ready.

  6. Start the warehouse in zones. After installation, compare the actual configuration with the project, the completeness of the system, the working aisles and the readiness of the area for loading. Move the goods to the already accepted zone, then open the next queue.

    Checkpoint: For each zone, there is a predetermined point in time when installation is completed and work with the product begins.


How to reduce downtime during relocation

Downtime reduces the phased start-up, during which the old and new sites perform operations in parallel for a certain time. To minimize time costs, form transfer queues based on the role of the inventory in the flow of goods and the need for specific operations. First launch the areas that are essential for receiving and shipping, as well as the areas of the most active product lines. Transfer slow stocks and reserve sections in subsequent waves.


For the manager, the main benchmark is the date when the warehouse will regain the required throughput after the relocation begins. Tie it to the planned order volume. This way, the relocation schedule will show the specific moment when the warehouse will return to the planned productivity.
