General description

Front-type pallet racks are a universal multi-level prefabricated storage system that allows you to store a variety of cargo both on EUR or FIN standard pallets and without containers thanks to additional options.

Front pallet racks have a drive-through design. They are distinguished by the fact that equipment can enter from the opposite direction, so the loading and unloading processes occur independently of each other, which allows you to increase the speed of cargo processing and practically eliminates its damage.

The rack configuration can be easily changed depending on the needs of your warehouse.

Our company supplies both standard configurations and complex designs with individual characteristics.

Types of front pallet racks

Front pallet racks

Front pallet racks are the most common, versatile and cost-effective system for storing and storing goods on pallets. The design of the rack allows you to place all the necessary cargo in one row, along the rack section. The rack system has a walk-through design and provides direct access to each pallet location at any time.

Front pallet racks combined with shelves

This is a combination of frontal pallet and shelf racks in one design. Unlike standard frontal racks, the design is supplemented with shelves on the lower tiers for storing various different-sized goods that require manual handling. This type of racking is perfect for large retail spaces, warehouses and enterprises where a variety of goods are stored at the same time - from small products to large batches of goods on pallets.

Double Deep Front Shelving

Double-depth racks or DOUBLE DEEP are double rows of frontal racks 2 frames deep with the ability to load pallets and cargo from one side using forklifts with telescopic forks in such a way that 4 pallets are installed in the space between the aisles.
This storage scheme increases the warehouse capacity by 30%. However, this solution requires the use of equipment (reach trucks or forklifts) with a special device for double-depth service.

About warehouse equipment: pallet racks with front access

Aspects to consider when designing pallet racks

The return on investment in a project is a very important parameter in an investor's decision-making process, but in the case of a project to equip or reconstruct a front pallet rack warehouse, there are many other factors that may escape simple payback calculations, as sometimes the cost of a single pallet space seems more important than the cost of storing and handling the final product.
The following aspects seem particularly important:

  • ensuring the availability of goods for the customer at the right time,

  • reduction in shipping times,

  • the ability to provide a service for storing the customer's cargo (in exchange for an additional fee) and to deliver it on their behalf (the task of a logistics operator)),

  • provision of additional services for the customer, e.g., assembly,

  • shipment in a specific sequence,

  • accepting returns from end consumers.

In order to properly assess these issues from the perspective of implementing the appropriate pallet racking technology, it is necessary to conduct a thorough analysis of the data with extrapolation of possible future goods turnover flows.
To predict possible future flows, it is also necessary to define business objectives.

Here are examples of how the warehouse is used and its role in the business process:

  1. Distribution - related to production with buffer tasks on the way to the end consumer, e.g., packaging;

  2. Accumulation with functions for receiving from different sources and creating a shipping sequence, e.g., food products;

  3. Long-term storage, e.g., cold rooms, archives;

  4. Multi-assortment, e.g., for the supply of automotive spare parts.

In its design practice, TOP LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS considers all possible options and answers the question: how will the chosen pallet rack layout benefit cargo handling, sales, and distribution processes?

Pallet racking layout schemes

You will find front pallet racking systems in almost every commercial warehouse where goods are stored and handled, offering a number of important benefits to operators:

  1. Maximize the use of vertical space in your warehouse. This results in an increase in overall capacity without the need to expand your facility.

  2. Provides easy reach of each pallet, which simplifies the placement and retrieval process, and also significantly speeds up operations and can reduce costs by minimizing time spent on handling.

  3. Designed taking into account the layout of your premises, the characteristics of your lifting equipment and the dimensions of the goods and materials to be stored. This individual approach ensures that your solution will be fully aligned with your work processes.

  4. Designed to be adaptable as the volume or type of goods stored changes. When you decide to buy pallet racking, you can be confident that as your business grows or evolves, your equipment can be adjusted or expanded to meet new requirements without requiring a complete overhaul of your existing configuration.

Classic back-to-back layout

These are the most common and traditional pallet racks due to their adaptability and versatility.
Here are a few reasons for their popularity:

  • adapts to any type of pallet and forklift,

  • quick and efficient assembly, disassembly and replacement of parts,

  • fast placement and direct and immediate processing of each pallet,

  • thanks to the various available accessories and configurations, the racks can be adapted to a wide range of weight or volume of goods,

  • maximum space increase thanks to easy and quick adjustment of the traverse level to any required volume,

  • Modular design that is easy to assemble and simplifies disassembly and re-installation, as well as any change in configuration and/or expansion of pallet racks in case of new storage needs.

A variety of structural elements allows you to modify the levels in the shelf to accommodate non-standard pallets, the depth of which is less than the depth of the frame, or retail goods for picking and processing orders.
The rows of racks are installed "back to back", pallet handling is carried out from aisles, the dimensions of which are determined by the width of the working corridor of the cargo equipment. In this case, the width of the corridor is sufficient to allow two units of equipment to work in it simultaneously, each on its own row of racks.
In the classical layout, the width of the working corridors can be considered a disadvantage, as it directly affects the density of placement and may be impractical in the case of building warehouses for long-term storage or with a small assortment.
Therefore, we recommend using this pallet racking arrangement in the following situations:

  1. Stocks with a large number of items requiring direct access to each unit of cargo.

  2. High turnover and heterogeneous products.

  3. Non-standard unit items requiring specific accessories such as bays, drums, containers.

  4. Rooms that require a combination of pallet and shelving.

Double-deep storage scheme

Double-depth pallet racks increase usable space by simply placing two pallets a shelf deep one behind the other, instead of one as in the classic arrangement.
Processing of two pallets is carried out in one pass, reducing the number of passes by half.
In short, double-depth solutions increase density by reducing the number of aisles and increasing pallet spaces compared to classic frontal, resulting in 20% to 40% savings in overall space.
The increase in storage capacity is the main advantage of double-deep. It can also be very convenient if two pallet spaces are required for one unit of goods.
In pallet racks designed as double-deep, the operator does not have direct contact with all pallets. Since direct access is only possible for one pallet, inventory management is based on the LIFO (last in, first out) principle.

Double levels must be serviced by trucks equipped with telescopic forks or a pantograph mechanism to handle the second pallet.

The large capacity and limited handling of single loads make the use of double-deep particularly recommended for warehouses with the following characteristics:

  1. For goods where one unit of product requires two pallet spaces;

  2. Homogeneous or identical products;

  3. With inventories with a medium or long useful life;

  4. With a highly efficient inventory management system where limited handling of all pallets is not a problem;

  5. In which a balance is needed between the availability or selectivity of positions and increasing capacity.

Narrow aisle shelving

Optimizing storage capacity can be achieved in two ways: by narrowing the aisles; or by increasing the height of the pallet racks. Narrow aisle layouts in combination with high frames combine both methods to achieve maximum space savings while maintaining general accessibility to each pallet. Narrow aisle racks combine most of the advantages of conventional racks, but with better use of floor space due to the reduced aisle width.

The biggest advantage of this arrangement is the excellent use of space with direct savings of 20% to 40%, as in a double-deep arrangement, and direct contact with any stored pallet, as in conventional front-ends.

Narrow aisle racks require the use of special forklifts (order pickers, reach trucks), which are designed to work in a smaller space than in traditional pallet racks, and move within the aisles using mechanical or induction guides.

However, the additional investment that may be required for narrow aisle forklifts is usually repaid through increased throughput and density. Also worth mentioning in this context is safety, namely the reduced level of damage to frame uprights as the order picker or reach truck moves along the aisle on guides.

In addition, the narrow aisle racking system allows it to be adapted to the needs of picking or order picking when using a picker.

Narrow-aisle pallet racking is a widely used and very versatile solution that allows you to optimize space.

It is especially recommended for companies whose storage facilities have any of the following characteristics:

  1. Direct and immediate access to each unit of cargo is required, but which at the same time require optimization of usable space.

  2. With single product lines with very different recipients.

  3. With heterogeneous products that require high rotation.

  4. With a reduced area, but with the possibility of installing a very high system.

Conclusions

The choice of pallet racking layout cannot be based on just one parameter, such as the maximum number of pallet spaces, as this will affect both the general availability of each product and the density.

In addition, the issue of the future warehouse cannot be considered without answering the question of the duration of the supply of goods.

We recommend parameterizing this factor in days of inventory in the warehouse relative to average days of shipments instead of using only the number of pallets as an indicator of technology choice.

In particular, we draw our clients' attention to the aspect of the so-called logistical throughput of structures, which must meet the tasks of the business process into which the storage system will be built. Unlike mechanical throughput, we recommend considering this parameter in relation to the actual number of operations with goods per unit of time, taking into account, for example, the accessibility of places, AST profile of equipment, safety regulations, etc.

Company TOP LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS offers a comprehensive turnkey solution, from drawings to implementation, regardless of whether you need individual pallet racks or want to include a racking solution as part of a large-scale warehouse construction or renovation project.
