Racking loads: how to read the label, calculate the safety margin and not lose the warranty

To control the load, check three values: the permissible weight per level, the maximum load of the section, and the actual weight of the load.
These values are valid for a specific rack configuration — with a specific number of levels, traverse height, and pallet placement scheme. Changing the configuration changes the calculation conditions. Therefore, before rearranging tiers or increasing the weight of the goods, double-check the system parameters.
How to read the load plate
The load rating plate is the operating limits of a particular racking system. If your warehouse uses pallet racking , check four parameters:
permissible load per level;
section limit load;
number and height of working levels;
cargo placement diagram.
After checking each level, add up the loads of all levels of the section and compare the result with the maximum allowable load per section.
For example, three levels of 2,700 kg give a total of 8,100 kg: for a section with a limit of 9,000 kg, such a scheme fits into the passport value.
If the number of levels or the height of the traverses changes, check the permissible load for the new configuration.
What does evenly distributed load mean?
A uniformly distributed load means that the mass is transferred to the cross members in the pattern for which the level is designed. Three pallets of 800 kg each give a total of 2400 kg. A single load of the same mass with a small support area creates a different load pattern, so this scenario requires separate verification.
Uniformity is especially important when changing the type of container, pallet, or unit size. When selecting warehouse racks , determine the maximum weight and how it is transferred to the structure.
How to calculate the working load reserve
The operating margin is the difference between the passport limit and the typical actual load. For a 3000 kg level with a working load of 2700 kg, it is 300 kg, or 10%.
This 10% is an internal reserve within the passport load capacity, which remains at the level of 3000 kg. The structural safety margin is included in the engineering calculation. The operational reserve is needed by the business to control fluctuations in the actual mass. A detailed calculation of warehouse racks is performed for specific loads and configurations.
For operational control, record the maximum pallet weight in the WMS or product card. The employee will be able to see the limit before placing the load, and the responsible person will be able to separately check the positions that are approaching the working reserve.
When to recheck the configuration
Re-inspection is required after changing the height of the crossbars, the number of levels, the mass of the load unit or the system components. A separate reason is the deformation of the frame or crossbar. Changing the levels requires verification with the manufacturer or supplier, since the permissible load is determined for a specific configuration.
The loading scheme also depends on the type of structure. Cantilever systems for long loads work with a different geometry of supports, and stacking systems for dense pallet storage work with deep channels.
A detailed overview of warehouse racking types will help you compare these systems by purpose.
Before changing the load, record the maximum mass of the cargo unit, check the level and section boundaries, and compare the actual configuration with the passport diagram. If the height of the traverses, the number of levels, or the composition of components change, agree on the new diagram in the manner prescribed by the technical documentation and the contract. This will maintain the system's compliance with the design loads and warranty conditions.
